Surf Dog is a father-daughter-owned restaurant born from a love of Costa Rica, good food, and even better company!

Ryan first came to Playa Grande straight out of high school, choosing adventure over a traditional path — and never looked back. By 20, she had opened Surf Dog and started building something special. Dave, Ryan’s father, brings a wealth of entrepreneurial spirit to the table: he co-founded a beer distribution company and now owns a bar back home in Philadelphia, the city where both he and Ryan grew up. Together, they’ve created something that feels like the best of both worlds — the laid-back soul of Costa Rica with the warmth of a true family business.

 

What We’re About

We opened Surf Dog with one goal: to bring a barefoot, family-friendly vibe to Playa Grande. Think tropical cocktails, delicious beach food, and a place where you can actually slow down. We put a deck of cards on every table — because some of the best moments happen when you put your phone away and just enjoy where you are. Add in a great playlist, live music from local artists, and BOGO happy hour every single day, and you’ve got our kind of afternoon.

 

The Team

We’ve been lucky enough to build Surf Dog alongside some truly passionate people, and we wouldn’t be the same without them.

 

Heiner — Bar Manager

Heiner has perfected every drink on our menu, and his margarita has quickly become a fan favorite (try it — you’ll understand). When he’s not behind the bar, you’ll find him in the water. Heiner is an avid surfer who gives lessons for both kids and adults, and those boards you see on our surf rack? Almost certainly his.

 

Omar — Executive Chef

When we first sat down with Omar, we told him we wanted burgers and hot dogs. He heard us, and then took it somewhere we never could have imagined. Omar has built out our entire menu with the kind of care and creativity that shows in every bite. His burgers are genuinely some of the best you’ll ever have, and every sauce on the menu is his own secret recipe — crafted to pair perfectly with whatever you order.
